OPEC warns of ‘chaos’ brought on by peak fossil fuel claims
The narrative that peak fossil fuel demand is near is dangerous, claims the organization.

On Thursday, the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) released a letter addressing a recent statement by the International Energy Agency that peak fossil fuel demand was near.
The organization claimed that such allegations could lead to “chaos.”
When the demand for fossil fuels, such as coal, oil, and natural gas, reaches its peak and starts to drop, this is referred to as the peak fossil fuel demand stage.
It is frequently mentioned in relation to the move towards a future with lower carbon emissions and more sustainable energy sources.
A dangerous narrative
According to OPEC, it is a very dangerous and unrealistic narrative.
To discount fossil fuels or imply that their end is near, is simply not true and could have severe outcomes, claims the organization.
It further adds that both peak supply and peak demand have been frequently predicted during previous years, yet neither has occurred thus far.
The danger of such projections today comes from the fact that they are frequently made in conjunction with recommendations to halt the funding of new oil and gas projects.
“Such narratives only set the global energy system up to fail spectacularly.
It would lead to energy chaos on a potentially unprecedented scale, with dire consequences for economies and billions of people across the world,”
said in the letter OPEC Secretary General, HE Haitham Al Ghais.
Discussions on the peak demand for fossil fuels are primarily motivated by the necessity to combat climate change.
This is because the main source of greenhouse gas emissions is fossil fuels.
Today, energy efficiency improvements and the shift to cleaner, more sustainable energy sources such as renewable energy are top priorities for many nations and regions.
Environmental concerns and a desire to lessen reliance on limited fossil fuel resources are the driving forces behind this change.
All these factors drive peak fossil fuel demand.
Technological advancements
However, OPEC argues that this thinking is not rational as it does not take into account the technological advancements that have made fossil fuels much more abundant.
The organization further claims that, just like 30 years ago, fossil fuels are currently responsible for meeting 80 percent of the world’s energy needs.
Fossil fuels, says OPEC, are a source of energy security and economic development that should not be ignored.
“Cognizant of the challenge facing the world to eliminate energy poverty, meet rising energy demand, and ensure affordable energy while reducing emissions, OPEC does not dismiss any energy sources or technologies, and believes that all stakeholders should do the same and recognize short- and long-term energy realities,” added HE Al Ghais.
However, the organization did note that it was making some investments to combat global warming, most notably in hydrogen projects, carbon capture utilization and storage facilities.
Is this enough?
As governments and international organizations put laws and rules into effect to cut back on the use of fossil fuels and as clean energy technologies advance, there is no doubt fossil fuels are less in demand.
Is OPEC holding on to an outdated power source or are fossil fuels still a viable part of the world’s energy mix?
Time will tell.

Eni Celebrates Sail Away of FPSO Firenze to Baleine Field Offshore Côte d’Ivoire
The FPSO Firenze will allow production start-up of the Baleine field, which is the largest hydrocarbon discovery in Côte d’Ivoire.
San Donato Milanese (Milan), 6 April 2023 – Eni, in partnership with PetroCi, celebrated the sail away of the FPSO Firenze to the Baleine field offshore Côte d’Ivoire in Dubai. The event was attended by Mamadou Sangafowa-Coulibaly, Minister of Mines, Petroleum and Energy Côte of d’Ivoire, and other dignitaries.
The FPSO Firenze will allow production start-up of the Baleine field, which is the largest hydrocarbon discovery in Côte d’Ivoire to date, with an estimated oil in place of 2.5 billion barrels and 3.3 trillion cubic feet of associated gas.
The development of Baleine will also be Africa’s first net-zero emission project (Scope 1 and 2).
The FPSO Firenze, that will be renamed Baleine after its arrival in Cote d’Ivoire, has been refurbished and upgraded in order to allow it to treat up to 15,000 bbl/d of oil and around 25 Mcfd/d of associated gas. The entire gas production will be delivered onshore via a newly built export pipeline.
The installation of the subsea production system and well completion campaign are underway and will ensure an accelerated start-up of production by June 2023.
Eni’s phased development model and fast track have proven to be effective, as the project is set to start production less than 2 years from the Baleine 1X discovery well and one and a half years after the FID. Eni is already progressing swiftly on the second phase of the project forecasting a start-up of production by December 2024 after having taken the FID in December 2022.
Eni is committed to sustainable development, and the Baleine field’s net-zero emission project is a significant step towards achieving this goal. The company looks forward to contributing to the development of Côte d’Ivoire’s hydrocarbon industry with the Baleine field and its other projects in the Ivorian deep water.
The Baleine field extends over blocks CI-101 and CI-802. Eni also owns interests in four other blocks in the Ivorian deep water: CI-205, CI-501, CI-401, and CI-801, all with the same partner, PetroCi Holding.

OPEC oil output falls on Angola, Iraq outages – Reuters survey

OPEC oil output fell in March due to oilfield maintenance in Angola and a halt in some of Iraq’s exports, a Reuters survey found on Friday, adding to the impact of strong adherence by top producers to a supply cut deal by the wider OPEC+ alliance.
The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) has pumped 28.90 million barrels per day (bpd) this month, the survey found, down 70,000 bpd from February. Output is down more than 700,000 bpd from September.
OPEC and its allies, known as OPEC+, agreed to cut production in late 2022 to support the market as the economic outlook worsened and prices weakened. A meeting of top OPEC+ ministers on Monday is expected to confirm the existing policy.
OPEC+ lowered its output target by 2 million bpd, of which about 1.27 million bpd was to come from the 10 participating OPEC countries. The target remains in place for March.
With the declines in Angola and Iraq this month, compliance with the agreement increased to 173% of pledged cuts, according to the survey, against 169% in February.
Output is significantly undershooting the targeted amount by 930,000 bpd because many producers – notably Nigeria and Angola – lack the capacity to pump at the agreed levels.
ANGOLA, IRAQ
The largest drop of 100,000 bpd was in Angola due to a small export programme and field maintenance on the Dalia stream. Exports hit a multi-month low on some estimates.
The second-biggest drop came from Iraq, where companies have reduced output in the northern Kurdistan region following a halt to the export pipeline on Saturday. Higher exports from southern Iraq limited the decline, the survey found.
OPEC’s Gulf producers Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates maintained high compliance with their targets under the OPEC+ agreement, the survey found.
Among countries with higher output, Nigerian production again posted OPEC’s biggest increase in March, the survey found, bringing the country closer to a target to lift output to 1.6 million bpd this quarter.
Libya, Iran and Venezuela are the three producers exempt from OPEC cuts. Iranian and Venezuelan output was steady while Libyan supply edged lower, according to the survey.
The Reuters survey aims to track supply to the market. It is based on shipping data provided by external sources, Refinitiv Eikon flows data, information from companies that track flows such as Petro-Logistics and Kpler, and information provided by sources at oil companies, OPEC and consultants
